Moving provides an excellent opportunity to reorganize your belongings. Do not pack items that you will never use, or have not used in the past few years. This will allow space for items that are needed or wanted in your new home.
Contact TLC Ladies for downsizing assistance.
TLC Ladies will not make any decisions, but offer our expert advice, keep the downsizing process on schedule, and do all of the physical work. When completing this process we can either work with an auctioneer, consignment shop, disposal service, or charity that you prefer or provide assistance from our list of notable service providers.
TLC Ladies takes absolutely no commissions from our referrals (i.e. consignment shops, auctioneers). The only thing we accept is great customer service from the companies we refer.
Helpful Suggestions for Downsizing
To help you decide what to move to your new home, try grouping items into these categories:
1) Items to take to your new residence
2) Items to give away to family/friends
3) Items to sell (auctioneer/consignment shops)
4) Items to donate
5) Items to discard
Take 1-2 hours a day to sort through one room at a time. Some areas of your home will take more time than others, below are some helpful suggestions.
Downsizing the Kitchen
- Eliminate multiple sets of dishes, pie plates, casserole dishes, pots and pans, etc.
- Eliminate large items (i.e. roasting pans, mixers, serving dishes)
- Do not bulk grocery shop before your move.
- Take inventory of food and cleaning supplies, try to use them before you move.
- Discard any expired food. Keep in mind most spices lose their flavor after one year.
Cleaning out the Bathroom
- Clean out medicine cabinets and discard anything (make-up, lotions, medicine, etc.) that is expired.
- Research to see if there is a linen service at your new home.
- Only take bedding for the size beds you will be taking.
- Review your new bathroom, How much storage is there? (Medicine cabinet, linen closet, drawer space)
Organizing the Closet
- Check with your community to see if they have a dress code. If they do, make sure your wardrobe is suitable and discard any unwanted items.
• Eliminate pieces that you have not worn in a year. This includes shoes, ties, purses, and other accessories.
• Eliminate soiled, torn, or otherwise damaged clothes.
